Collectors Run For Telugu Translation!

Big heads in the state are bothering about the future of Telugu. Government also introduced official language commission (Adhikaara Bhaasha Sangham) long back and the position has seen many stalwarts in the crème. ABK Prasad is now in the office of Official Language Commission. It appears that whoever comes to the chair the plight has been same and steady.

26th was the last date to submit Ration Card applications. Majority of applicants are obviously middle and below middle class people who knows no English. But the applications, instructions, rules and regulations were given in English. When CV Padma Rao of Telugu Bhaashadyama Saikhya complained the same to government and concern authorities the decision was taken at top level and all the district collectors have got the things translated into Telugu at last. Well, it was on the last date of submitting applications.

What ABK Prasad is doing? Is a million dollar question?

Telugu in a Danish museum

Look at this piece of furniture ( most probably a secretaire ) and observe the words near it's top:

http://obese.dk/obese5/o5nb_15.htm

It is an exhibition object at the museum of Kolding Castle, Denmark, and according to Dr. Vemuri garu, it is a reasonable guess that the person who once ordered it was connected to southeastern India through the ancient Danish trade colonies of Trankebar and Frederiksnagore (Serampor).

    తోలు బొమ్మలాట

Tollu Bommalu (Tholu Bommalatta) is one of the best known forms of puppetry in India, and is the best example of the wonderfully varied forms of shadow-puppet Theatre in Asia. It is found in several regions of Andhra Pradesh state in south India. Tolu means a 'leather' and bommalu means 'doll'.

According to the oral tradition, the form originated in 200 BC when it was patronized by the rulers of the Satvahana dynasty. In the 16th century during the reign of King Kona Reddy, a ruler of the Vijayanagar Empire, a Telugu manuscript entitled Ramayana Ranganathana was composed specifically for the shadow theatre. Besides providing a dramatic text of the famous epic story, the manuscript includes instructions for the constructions and decoration of SHADOW PUPPETS. Families of puppeteers even today jealously guard copies of the manuscripts from outside study.

Puppets are cut from various types of hide and processed in a special manner. Most puppets, including humans and saints, are made of goat skin. Demons are carved of buffalo hide, and gods and heroes of deerskin. Puppets are large, translucent and multi coloured. The puppets from Madanapally District are 4ft tall and those from Kakinada are as tall as 5ft.

The leather puppet is wedged into a split bamboo strip and tied along the length of the strip from the head to the crotch to provide support. Different emotional streets of a character are depicted by separate puppets. For example to show a scenic environment a tree puppet is shown. Many puppets have movable hands and legs and some, movable heads and necks. Puppets are dyed black, red and green: For females and sages the dominant colour is yellow. The colourful
shadows are cast on a wide white screen made of sturdy cotton cloths.

The chief manipulator stands behind the screen manipulating the puppets using strings tied to them. For big puppets two people manipulate each puppet.

A typical troupe of between six and ten people is composed of manipulators, singers, dancers and instrumentalist. Women speak the female part and stage manager manipulates the shadows during dance numbers.

Musicians play mridangam drum, bell metal cymbals, and sometimes harmonium and mukavina, and oboe-like wind instrument special effects delight the audience. for example when a character is shot with an arrow during a battle, a whizzing noise is produced by a small whistle as a leather arrow, on a rod is whisked across the screen. When it strikes the victim, severing his head, the puppet head is detached quickly by a string and made to roll across the screen. Drummers accentuate the action with loud thuds.

The stage manager introduces the subject of the play and the preliminaries and the introduction of characters is given. When the play starts and ends after a minimum of two hours.

Plans afoot to publish 100 titles by year-end

To reprint the classics in Telugu literature Visaalandhra has nine showrooms across the State The publishing house runs mobile libraries in three towns Plans to expand presence in State

VIJAYAWADA: Visaalandhra Publishing House (VPH) will publish Telugu translation works of noted Bengali writer Sarat in 10 volumes by March 2006. Plans are afoot to publish 100 titles including novels, poetry and monographs by the end of this year.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, publishing house manager P. Rajeswara Rao said that they were keen on reprinting the classics in Telugu literature, for which there was a demand in the market. Technology like desktop publishing was helping publishers complete their work with ease.

The time for publishing a book had been reduced to a few days from months, he observed. Stating that the impact of electronic media was diminutive on publication market, Mr. Rao said that people wanted to read what they were not getting from television.

"Compared to the contemporary literature, classics are in demand now. We are giving priority to reprint the works of noted writers like Gurajada Appa Rao and Sripada Subramanya Sastry. Young generation prefers to read books on personality development," he said.

Stating that the publishing house was encouraging new writers, Mr. Rao said that they were conducting writers conferences across the State and were seeking feedback from writers and book lovers on latest publications. The publishing house had nine showrooms across the State.

Need to analyse impact of literature as a binding force

Seminar on `Telugu literature: human relations and values'

VIJAYAWADA: Speakers at a national seminar on `Telugu literature: human relations and values' organised by the Montessori Mahila Kalasala here on Saturday emphasised the need for analysing the impact of literature in developing and strengthening human relations in today's competitive world.

Delivering the keynote address, Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, of Andhra University, pointed out that through the centuries, Telugu literature and writers contributed only to setting standards in moral values. The all-important aspect of standardising human relations and contacts was neglected totally till some writers began selecting even trivial matters as the core of their writings.

Prof. Prasad said that though Rama and Sita faced a lot of trials and tribulations during their lifetime, literature as it was taught portrayed them as an ideal couple and one would bless a newly married couple to live like them. G Krupachari a professor at Acharya Nagarjuna University said that there would be an indirect influence of literature on human relations and this was a constantly evolving subject.

The Montessori president, V.V. Krishna Rao, the Director & Correspondent V. Koteswaramma, the Principal, M. Eeswaramma, and others spoke.

    కృష్ణ తరంగాలు ....Andhra's own Niagara

FURY UNLEASHED: Tourists trooped in to see this not-so-common sight at Srisailam.

SPELLBINDING: People watching the Krishna in spate at the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada on Sunday. Photo: Ch. Vijaya Bhaskar

LOOK AT THAT! An awe-struck little admirer looks on at Nagarjunasagar

NAGARJUNASAGAR: Nagarjunasagar, the world's largest masonry dam, is overcrowded by a different class of visitors called rain tourists for the past three days.

Thousands of them are descending on the place to feast on the glorious sight of the rising and falling Krishna water before it flows away towards the sea via Prakasam barrage at Vijayawada.

This spectacle was not witnessed in the last seven years.

As gushing waters drop with a roar to a depth of about 560 feet into the bucket level and bounce back to a height of over 200 feet as an enchanting foam, visitors thrilled by the cool spray on their face couldn't resist cries of joy. Occasionally rainbows arise at the feet of the project to the delight of one and all.

Even a heavy downpour in the evening did not dampen the spirit of the visitors standing on the old bridge watching the swirling waters flow past. It gives me a feeling that I am at the world's famous Niagara falls, said Ram Kumar, a US-based software professional, who is in India on a fortnight's visit.

Though the authorities opened only 16 gates till afternoon, six more were lifted as the inflows into the reservoir rose steadily on Saturday evening. But they closed down four this evening while letting out 5.5 lakh cusecs of water into the sea.

The bathing ghats, constructed during last year's Krishna Pushkaram, were submerged by the surging waters. The Tourism department, which operates mechanised boats to Nagarjuna konda, a hillock housing a museum to depict Buddhist culture located in the middle of the river, suspended its ferry services for the last four days.

I was having my siesta but my children woke me up and wanted me to take them to the dam to see the release of water, Mallaiah, a security officer of the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation (APGenco) at the Nagarjunasagar dam power house, told this website's newspaper.

He has been working at this place since 2000 but the last time water was discharged on this scale was in 1998.

Caught unawares by the heavy rush of tourists after many years, those at the two Punnami restaurants of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) at the dam are finding it tough to arrange food.

However, officials have swung into action to make necessary arrangements for the comfort of the tourists.

    శిఖామణి - మువ్వల చేతికర్ర ( SikhAmaNi - Twinkling Walking Stick)

Sikhamani is the pen-name of K. Sanjeeva Rao, an Assistant Professor at Telugu University in Hyderabad. He hails from Yanam - this is a Union Territory alongwith Pondicherri, with which it shares the French colonial heritage. "muvvala cEti karra" and "cilakkoyya" are his main poetry collections. He's also noted critic and researcher of contemporary literary theory and trends. He recently edited a poetry anthology called "amma" (Mother), featuring hundred or so poems from many contemporary Telugu poets on that theme - There is another poem by Allam Narayana from that anthology in this websites collection.

I was told that this selection is a good example of his poetry. It is also the title piece of his poetry collection.

    *****

    A rendition in English

Me, you may leave on the sea shore
I won't worry for the pearl unfound.
I will build a magnificient empire
One sand castle at a time.
Observing the trails left by the waves' footprints,
I'll find a small shell and I'll rejoice.

Me, you may release into the garden
I won't brood over the nightingale unheard.
    I'll jump and jump
For the fruit on the tree branch
    Tired I fall, but
I'll just brush the dirt off my bum
With both hands, just like a little kid.

Me, you may let go into the wind
    Like a dragonfly or butterfly
I won't be disappointed by the absence of flowers
    Or for the colorful rainbow.
I'll compose complete grammar for wind-speak
    I'll whisper in your ear,
The secrets of the rains and the storms.

If not all this, you may let me loose
    Like an orphan boy
    Into that crowded city square
I won't lament the absence of loving.
I'll be the tinkling walking stick*,
And help the blind man across the road.

    * Tinkling walking stick: The equivalent of "white stick" for the blind. It has a ring of small round bells at one end, and produces a tinkling sound, a common device used by the blind on Indian streets.

    నగుమోము గనలేని

'nagumOmu ganalEni' is a famous composition by ThyAgarAja. Since it is a song of total surrender and pleading to the Lord, it was composed in abhEri.

Given below are the lyrics (courtesy Sangeetham.com), and the various versions, including modern western renditions of this melodious keerthana.

    Meaning:

Having come to know of my distress at not being able to see your smiling face, should you not protect me? O scion of Raghu’s race!

O one who carried the mountain! Your assistants are not of the type to give you false advice! No it cannot be! (Having come to know of my distress at not being able to see your smiling face, should you not protect me?)

Has Garuda on coming to know of your desire to give me darshan complained that the distance from the heavens to the earth is too much? O supreme being, protector of the universe! To whom should I turn now? I cannot bear your illusory tactics! O object of Tyagaraja’s worship, protect me! (Having come to know of my distress at not being able to see your smiling face, should you not protect me?)

    Notes:

This is perhaps the most popular of all Tyagaraja kritis, given its dramatic content. The song was originally sung in AbhEri but later Musiri Subramanya Iyer took to rendering it in karnATaka dEvagAndhAri and that is the version that has stuck. Today many believe AbhEri to be karnATaka dEvagAndhAri thanks to this song.
