Andhra-born cancer specialist among top US doctors

Indian-born US cancer specialist Dattatreyudu Nori has been adjudged as one of the top physicians in the United States, according to a survey that figured100,000 cancer specialists,

The survey, conducted by the reputable Castle Connolly Medical Ltd, published a list of America's Top Doctors and Dr Nori figured among them.

In the survey, the specialists were asked to name the country's best physicians for cancer treatment with a question ''to whom would you send members of your family?''

The most important criteria for selection of the top doctors were excellence in patient care, education, board certification, professional reputation, research, hospital and medical school appointments.

In another recent survey done by The Ladies Home Journal, Dr Nori was named as one of the top doctors in America for the treatment of cancer among women.

Dr Nori is professor and chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center.

In addition, Dr. Nori is professor and chairman of Radiation Oncology at the New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens. He is also the director of oncology at the New York Hospital Queens.

Dr. Nori has an international reputation as a pioneer and authority in radiation oncology and brachytherapy. He was instrumental in introducing the current techniques and clinical concepts of High Dose Rate Brachytherapy for gynaecological, genitourinary, thoracic and head and neck tumours.

Dr. Nori both, where he was chief of brachytherapy at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and chairman of the department at Cornell, has been called ''a recognised leader in his speciality'' by the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr Nori has published three books and more than 200 scientific articles. He has received a Gold Medal from the Indian Medical Association for his contribution to cancer research and training Indian physicians in the United States. He also received the Excelcier Award from the Network of Indian Professionals in the United States and other Indo-US organizations.

Dr. Nori established Fellowship Programs for Indian physicians to come to the United States to receive training at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in advanced techniques of Radiation Oncology, Surgery and Medical Oncology as well.

Dr. Nori has provided technical and scientific help for many cancer centers in India and he is also the founding member of the Indo-American Cancer Institute for Women and Children, a 200-bed cancer and research institute in Hyderabad, which was inaugurated in 2001.

The Andhra Pradesh-born doctor completed his undergraduate training at Kurnool Medical College and received his postgraduate medical degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He then joined the staff of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he became chief of the Brachytherapy Service before accepting the current position as chairman of Radiation Oncology at Cornell.
