Kurnool : Move to retrieve rare manuscripts

Team with three coordinators and 50 volunteers formed

KURNOOL: An exercise to retrieve rare manuscripts and documents started in Kurnool district. Government Oriental Manuscripts, Library and Research Institute constituted a team with three coordinators and 50 volunteers to survey and collect information of manuscripts older than 70 years.

Director of the Institute Jayadheer Tirumal Rao said the exercise was to collect the information of existence of a document and not for taking it over. Prof. Rao told a meeting here on Thursday that after detection of the manuscript and its utility, the document would be converted into digital form through a formal procedure. He asked volunteers not to create confusion among the custodians of the manuscripts that the Government wanted to snatch it from them.

He said Kurnool district too was identified as one of the places where ancient culture flourished and hundreds of rare documents were available with the common man. He said though Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts were separated from Andhra to join to them with Tamil areas, 35 ancient Telugu folk arts existed among Telugu speaking population.

He said even nomadic tribes possessed certain rare documents regarding their marriages and divorce.

Coordinator

Deputy Director of Adult Education Balarami Reddy was named coordinator of the programme while two other coordinators Vaidyam Venkateswaracharyulu and Venkateswara Reddy would assist him.

Local literary figures and scholars--Gadiyaram Ramakrishna Sarma, K. Chandrasekhara Kalkura, K. Maddaiah, JSRK Sarma--and others attended the meeting.
