Telugu as 'movement' gets into business

Monday February 13 2006 12:20 IST

VIJAYAWADA: Unless we have the textual evidence, it would be difficult to establish Telugu as a classical language. A research study under a university should corroborate facts from ancient texts to justify the claim of classical language status for Telugu, said scholar and Dalit literary activist Katti Padma Rao.

Our inability to establish the authenticity of the ancestry takes the language back to a thousand years, said Rao participating in a symposium on 'Telugu as a Language' organised by the Krishna District Writers' Association, Telugu Bhasha Chaitanya Samithi and Potti Sriramulu University at K.L Rao Bhavan on the Institute of Engineers compound here on Sunday.

"Language unifies a community. But political can provide the credence of a classical language Telugu deserves", suggested Rao urging Avanigadda MLA Mandali Buddha Prasad (who was on the dais) to take up the cause.

Participating as panel speaker, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University Vice-Chancellor Avula Manjulatha declined to term the demand for classical language status to Telugu as a movement. She felt it was still in a stage of awakening and needed concerted efforts by the organisers before it turned out to be a demand.

Institutional support for the movement is a far-fetched dream in the absence of enough funds, she clarified.

A keynote address delivered by Samala Rameshbabu focused on the need to accord second national language status to Telugu besides making it the official language in the state administration.

Senior journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao recalled his efforts to pressurise the government in providing Telugu its due honour.

Vernacular daily Andhrajyothi editor K Ramachandra Murthy sought a socio-political awareness to achieve the desired result.

MLA Buddha Prasad said the government functions on the basis of public opinion and it cannot work without the support of the people. Hence, scholars and linguists should convince the government of the need to take a policy decision with regard to the demand for special status to the language.

Dr GP Purnachand, general secretary of Krishna District Writers' Association moderated the symposium. His book బ్రిటిష్ యుగం ('British Yugam') was released by K Ramachandra Murthy.

Earliler, M Narayana Prasad welcomed the gathering.
