NALGONDA: Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Official Languages Commission A.B.K. Prasad has seen "an international attempt" to demean languages like Telugu.

Addressing `Telugu Vikasam', an awareness programme meant for Government officials, at China Venkata Reddy function hall here on Friday, he said, "To capture the market of the developing world, there is an attempt to get a hold on the international communication system. In this process, English is being promoted in a big way."

He said the World Bank was making an attempt to influence the education system at the primary level.

He observed that 30 per cent of children in the State had distanced themselves from their mother tongue. "If the trend continues unabated, creativity will come to an end," he said.

Plea to officials

He further appealed to the officials to use Telugu in their files for a better reach.

Later, speaking to reporters, Mr. Prasad observed that inscriptions and coins should also be considered apart from the written text while according the ancient language status to any language.

Demanding that Telugu be recognised as an ancient language, he said, "Since others questioned the roots of our language, we are forced to show the reasons as to why our language should be accorded the status."

Oath administered

In the presence of Mr. Prasad, officials including Collector K. Vijayanand and SP M. M. Bhagwat took an oath of allegiance to Telugu language.

Rally taken out

Earlier, a rally was taken out from Shivajinagar to the function hall to highlight the need of using Telugu in day-to-day life.

Member of the commission Kaluva Mallaiah, municipal chairperson P. Venkatanarayana Goud and District Revenue Officer M. Champa Lal and others also spoke on the occasion.
