Book Review: The Splendour of Andhra Art - P R Ramachandra Rao

Extraordinary chapter in Indian civilisation

June 23, 2006

By Jane Mayne

Anyone fascinated by Indian culture and history will find this review of interest.

Art critic and historian Ramachandra Rao has collated information on sites such as the rock cut caves of Pitalkohra; the cave sanctuaries at Kondane and the impressive rock mansion at Karle, which has a 360-foot Chaitya-hall.

Rao uses quite formal English, which takes a bit of getting used to, and his slant is very obviously male gendered, as there is little reference to women at all, which does seem rather odd, all things considered.

Nevertheless, this whirlwind tour of Andhra culture offers many engaging moments. Besides the antiquities, coins, figurines and carvings of deities there are locations such as the pre-historic remains found at Temple Lakshmi Narasim-haswami on the Hill of Bliss at Mangalagri

Essentially it's an all-embracing look at architecture, sculpture and painting with supporting photos and illustrations. Aspects of literature, song, drama, regional dance forms and folk performances are also covered.

Rao attempts to catalogue an extraordinary chapter in Indian civilisation and fine arts. He includes many grand works by master craftsmen which showcase superbly executed architectural and decorative elements.

The book also has been used for a 10-part documentary which has been telecast over India's Doordarshan broadcasting corporation.
