Smitha : "I'm a perfectionist"

Pop diva Smitha girl is raring to make a mark in the international arena.
The dusky singer from Vijayawada, who hogged the limelight at the age of 18, with her album Hai rabba in 1998, has come a long way. She was the first pop singer from Andhra Pradesh. Her super hit album మసక మసక ( Masaka masaka) with Harry Anand was the first ever remixed album in Telugu. She went on to win the film fare award in 2005. Nine years and six albums on, she still remains the only pop icon from south India. Hyderabad Times caught up with the bubbly diva.

Musical affair

Singing started as a hobby. But now, it's a profession, and my life revolves around it. In the beginning, I was not sure for how long I would pursue it as a career. But it kind of grew on me. However, all this wouldn't have been possible without my family's support. Initially, my decision to take up singing as a career raised many eyebrows, but my family always encouraged me. In fact, it was my father's idea to become a pop singer. He believed that playback singers always remain in the background and never get the recognition that pop singers get. I am told that I had started humming when I was 10 months old. Music had always been my passion, but I wasn't the kind of person to practice for two-and-a-half hours every day. I haven't gone through any formal training, but I listen to all kinds of music.

Style statement

Being a Virgo, I am a perfectionist. Little things matter a lot to me. I do not have a definitive style mantra, but before trying a look, I make sure that I can carry it off.

Tryst with the big screen

I acted in a couple of flicks, but music is keeping me completely occupied nowadays. I have realised that I am a singer and acting doesn't interest me much. I might give a serious thought to acting if I come across a musical film like Swarnakamalam or Sankarabharanam.

Future plans

Currently, I am working on a new album, which will be shot in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil simultaneously. But even now, I feel that I have to achieve a lot more. I want to make a mark in the international arena soon.
