‘Parents should make children love Telugu’

Fears over next generation remaining alien to mother tongue expressed

TIRUPATI: The fifth day of the literary meet తెలుగు భాషా బ్రహ్మోత్సవాలు (Telugu Bhasha Brahmotsavalu) on Monday witnessed linguists asking parents to make their children love their mother tongue, culture and traditions.

Yarlagadda Lakshmiprasad, former parliamentarian and presently a member of Hindi implementation panel, expressed concern that adoration and love for the mother tongue was almost on the brink of collapse among Telugus.

He said that it should be inculcated right from childhood and not injected through such seminars and conferences by literary bodies and voluntary organisations.

Taking the cue, personality development guru Yandamoori Veerendranath said that parents were solely responsible for the emergence or otherwise of children as full-fledged personalities and appealed to them to respond to their immediate needs.

Government blamed

Blaming the government for leaving Telugu high and dry at the school education level in his lecture on ‘Why mother tongue’, Singamaneni Narayana feared that the next generation would remain alien to their own language if the trend continued for two more decades.

He strongly advocated the need to encourage teaching in vernacular languages.

In the session presided over by director of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam’s Annamacharya Project Medasani Mohan, Vakulabharanam Ramakrishna spoke on the ‘Historical legacy of Telugus’, K. Rammohan Roy on ‘Arudra’s worldly outlook’, J. Krishnaprasad on ‘Glory of Vijayanagara empire’ and Meegada Ramalingaswamy on the greatness of ‘Tirupati Venkatakavulu’.

Felicitated

Actress of yesteryear Anjali Devi, litterateurs -- C.V. Subbanna Sathavadhani and S.T.Gnanananda Kavi -- were felicitated on the occasion.

‘Ashtavadhanam’ by Garikapati Narasimha Rao and ‘Perini Sivathandavam’ by the disciples of Nataraja Ramakrishna evoked thunderous applause from the audience.

అన్నమయ్య కీర్తనలు reflect the greatness of Telugu

TIRUPATI: Telugu is one of the ancient languages in the world. Its richness is amply evident in అన్నమాచార్య సంకీర్తనాలు (Annamacharya Sankeerthanas) written several hundred years ago.

Saint composer Annamayya wrote 32,000 Sankeerthanas in pure Telugu, without using even a single word from other languages, including Sanskrit, said speakers, highlighting the uniqueness of the language at the తెలుగు భాషా బ్రహ్మోత్సవాలు (Telugu Bhasha Brahmotsavams) today.

They stressed the need for conserving the treasures of the great language from the influence of Western culture and English language.

Kamisetty Srinivasulu said Annamayya literary works reflect the greatness of Telugu. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is bringing out a Telugu dictionary for some words used in Sankeerthanas.

On the fourth day of the nine-day event, some thought provoking discussions took place.

Talks on ‘Telugu language in writings of poet Tikkana’ by K Venkata Lakshminarasimham, ‘Devotion in Bhagavatham’ by Rallabandi Kavitha Prasad, ‘Richness of language in Prabhandams’ by O Sivashankar Rao, and ‘Stray verses’ (entertaining conversation) and Adroitness’ by K Varaprasad were inspiring.

Palepu Varijarani spoke on ‘Sathakam and its use’ and Medimalli Ravikumar on short poems.

తెలుగు సంస్కృతి వికాస వేదిక (Telugu Samskruthi Vikasa Vedika), which is organising the fete, felicitated TG Kamala Devi, a noted playback singer, and Savitramma, wife of famous singer late Ghantasala, along with renowned writers Samala Sadasiva and Chalasani Prasad.

Vedika president B Karunakar Reddy and others were present. Cultural programmes were presented by noted artistes in the evening.

Telugu Bhasha Brahmotsavam hits new publicity trail

A giant LED screen installed outside Mahati Auditorium in Tirupati

TIRUPATI: For the first-ever Telugu Bhasha Brahmotsavams being held here, the main roads turned virtual auditoriums thanks to the marvels of modern technology.

The Brahmotsavams is the reincarnation of yesteryears’ Telugu Bhasha Samskruthi Varotsavalu. With people pouring into the venue - Mahati Auditorium, which has a capacity of 2,000, organisers came up with a strategy to adopt modern technology to address the crisis.

They set up a giant LED screen outside the auditorium in addition to two screens. People who could not find a seat or a place to stand inside, can watch the proceedings on the screens outside the auditorium.

One more LED giant screen was set up at the entrance to Gandhi Street near Nalgugukalla Mandapam, close to Sri Govindraja Swamy temple and railway station. Loudspeakers were fixed to electric poles.

Besides, posters and hoardings of noted poets, poetesses, and eminent personalties of Telugu language, literature and history were erected at strategic places and colourful banners were seen anywhere, giving the town a festive look.

CM renews plea for classical status to Telugu

Telugu antiquity dates back to 2000 years

“Largest spoken language next to Hindi”

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday dashed off yet another letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh renewing the State’s plea for according “classical language” status to Telugu. He said “nothing short of this will do justice to the sentiments of Andhra Pradesh people”. Any laxity in this respect might be construed as ignoring the sentiments. He requested Dr. Singh to consider the far-reaching implications of this burning issue and expedite the process.

Referring to the eligibility criteria, specified by the Home Ministry to get the classical status such as “a high antiquity of early texts/recorded history of over 1,000 years”, the Chief Minister said records suggested that Telugu antiquity dated back to more than 2,000 years.

He said “agonising delay” in according status to Telugu is causing heartburn to over 10 crore Telugu-speaking people in the world today. “Telugu is the largest spoken language in the country, next only to Hindi,” he added. He told the Prime Minister that the numismatic, scriptural and epigraphical evidences dating back to the second and third century BC and from 4th to 6th century AD clearly established Telugu as one of the oldest Dravidian languages. He said literary giants praised Telugu for its beauty and mellifluousness. Indira Gandhi specified Telugu as “one of the oldest languages spoken by large number of people. Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran observed that Telugu grew along with Tamil.

“Sundara Telugu”

Tamil poet Subramanya Bharatiyar admired it as “Sundara Telugu”. And celebrated French linguist Daniel Negers observed that French and Telugu had a lot of commonalities, but while French grew into an international language, Telugu remained confined to a small corner.

Veda Dharma

TTD’s Executive Officer, K.V. Ramanachary said the Tirupati fete should inspire like-minded bodies elsewhere in the State and in the country to work for a cultural and spiritual renaissance.

Literature to mend fences

Hyderabad, November 19: నల్ల గుర్రపు నాదా (Nalla Gurrapu Naada), Telugu fiction by an avant-garde litterateur, is all set to hog the limelight in the context of the recent twin blasts in the city.

Ten thousand copies of the book have been bought by an NRI professional to be circulated among students below the age of 16 in an attempt to spread the message of peace and communal harmony.

Inspired by the restraint and resilience displayed by Hyderabadis in the aftermath of the twin bomb blasts, Srisail Reddy Punjugula, Operations Manager in Manchester Academy of English in the U.K., is coming up with a programme to save the qualities from slipping into oblivion.

Two-way programme

Named ‘Chak De Hyderabad’, it will be a two-directional programme to be carried out in association with ‘New Syllabus Literature’, a publishing agency run by the author of the book, Sauda alias P.Karunanidhi.

As part of the programme, about 30 schools from the districts of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Khammam, Mahabubnagar and Nizamabad will be visited where copies of the book—Srisail’s favourite--will be distributed free of cost to teachers and the students. The second part of the programme comprises publishing of an anthology containing students’ versions of the blasts. “So far, the discourse of communal bigotry has been confined to the intellectual camps. My aim behind the distribution of the book is to bring it into public focus,” says Mr. Reddy.

The plot of ‘Nalla Gurrapu Naada’ seeks to debunk the notions of patriotism and accompanying communal fallacies. Published for the first time in 2003, the book had already sold 4,000 copies. Sauda’s books are seldom sold in bookshops due to their high price. Instead, he undertakes door-delivery to whoever orders for them. Mr. Sauda can be contacted on 92471 50243.

Disney characters to speak Telugu

ENTERTAINMENT: Walt Disney to introduce a two-hour Telugu band on its flagship Disney channel.

Disney characters will now speak Telugu. Walt Disney Television International, that operates three children’s channels in India, is introducing a two-hour Telugu band on its flagship Disney Channel. The channel is currently available in English and Hindi languages.

Walt Disney’s senior vice-president and managing director, Antoine Villeneuve, said that Disney’s decision to launch the channel in Telugu was based on the success of Jetix in the south.

Jetix, the kids’ channel targeted at boys in the age group of 6 to 11, is the number one children’s channel in the region and is available in both Tamil and Telugu.

To drive up Disney’s viewership, Villeneuve is focusing on content. For a start, December will see the channel premiere High School Musical 2 on Disney. The film is a sequel to High School Musical which turned out to be a super hit children’s film in the US last year.

High School Musical 2 was premiered in America in August and has been viewed by 60 million people. To promote the film in India, Disney has released its music album and will now air a promotional music video shot in India.

The channel has already sourced a children’s serial in Hindi. Called Shararat, the serial was first aired on Star Plus. “The biggest challenge is to make Disney Channel move up in terms of accessibility, reach and connection,” said Villeneuve.

He said that while Jetix was leading in the south, Hungama, acquired from UTV last year, was the leader in the Hindi speaking markets. The effort will now be to make Disney more exciting by revamping its packaging as well. “Hungama gives that additional surface to our Indian operations,” said Villeneuve.

Though he refused to divulge figures, Villeneuve said that advertising on children’s channels was growing at 35 per cent a year. The top Jetix executive in France, Villeneuve was appointed MD of Walt Disney in India in June this year.

Women told to contribute more to Telugu literature

Laudable effort: Andhra Pradesh Minister for Women Development and Child Welfare N. Rajyalakshmi (right) releasing a book in Chennai . President of All India Telugu Federation, Chennai, C.M.K. Reddy (left) receives the first copy. Author Nirmala Palanivelu is in the picture.

CHENNAI: Two books covering diverse subjects from spiritualism, literature to national issues authored by Telugu writer Nirmala Palanivelu were released here recently.

Launching the publications at a function organised by the city-based cultural academy జనని (Janani), Andhra Pradesh Minister for Women Development and Child Welfare N. Rajyalakshmi said the contribution of women to Telugu literature was less compared to that of men. More women writers must make a mark in the field of literature, she said.

The author of the books had highlighted spiritual values in ప్రణవ ప్రత్యూషం (Pranava Prathyusham) and alluded to mythology and various epics.

Ms.Rajyalakshmi commended the author’s narrative style in her second book, ‘Ananya Manognyam,’ a compilation of essays and short stories. A lecturer by profession, Ms. Palanivelu, who is also Janani’s president, is actively into social and cultural activities, the Minister said. Inaugurating the exhibition, Ms.Rajyalakshmi said the artist had portrayed the scenic beauty of nature in her paintings.

Open Handset Alliance and Telugu Unicode

With the launch of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) and Android platform today by a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies, including Google, we can expect their Linux-based phones to roll sometime next year. Penetrating a market dominated by Symbian will not be easy, but it is certainly not impossible for an initiative backed by the Mountain View technology giant.

A less observed tangential news from Ascender Corporation, which is also part of the OHA, is seen here: Ascender Corp. Provides Fonts to Open Handset Alliance

"Ascender is developing a collection of fonts that will be delivered as part of the Android platform. The fonts will be used as part of the User Interface and will provide support for multiple languages."

Does this mean all (or some) future Linux phones based on the Android platform will be loaded with Ascender's fonts by default? If so, will that include South Asian languages (like Telugu) also? If not, will it still be easier to put in multilingual fonts and get Telugu unicode rendered perfectly on mobile browsers installed on the Android OS?

Don't neglect Telugu, students told

KADAPA: District Intellectuals Forum president M. Vivekananda Reddy expressed concern on Thursday that people were neglecting their mother tongue in their urge to learn English.

Speaking at the A.P. Formation Day celebrations at Pushpagiri school here, he said though learning English became imperative for professional education and business purposes, students and youth should be fluent in Telugu too. He urged the Government to ensure that Telugu has a place of pride in the society. He wanted tourism-related programmes taken up to propagate the glorious history of the State.

Students attired as Vedic pandits recited slokas and poems. Principal Sivakumar and large number of students participated. Pushpagiri school students performed two dances on the occasion.
